Reflection 8: Resources for reporting a solutions story
Children's health has always been a huge concern for society. It was an issue for many children with conditions of obesity and diabetes which became a public health issue in this country's' history.
The problem have affect children more frequently with less physical activities, bad nutrition choices, and other lifestyle decision to risk their health. To prevent child obesity to further become a risk for America, their have to be some solutions to strengthen the health and well being for the children.
Six research resources have ideas to solve the situation of childhood obesity that could change America for the better. The resources also tell the key findings of how the situation is worse by statistics and research. As researchers look furthermore in the information about the youth being affected from childhood obesity, low income families and being less knowledgeable to the situation are major factors to the issue.
The journalistic article "Link between TV viewing and mortality" inform the audience to the situation of childhood obesity being connected television watching. The key finding about child obesity from the article said, "Risk of death was found to be about the same in studies that adjusted for TV viewers’ body mass indexes and those that did not."
This finding is a result of childhood obesity and weight gain that risk problems like chronic heart disease and type two diabetes. Though the risk of child obesity is risky to children, the limitations of accessing healthier foods is a key reason.
Transportation would be a reason because of the distance to go to the grocery store. The youth in California is facing the same assessment with less access to transportation. "The researchers noted that access to transportation could be a more essential determinant of dietary behaviors than immediate availability and that only 3% of households in the 2007 CHIS survey did not have access to a car," according to the article "Neighborhood food environment and diet among California youth".
Because of this dilemma, the article "Minority benefit from obesity prevention program" provide a solution which is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). They said, "WIC is a federal program that provides low-income families with healthy foods, nutrition education, health referrals and more.
In addition, parents receive checks or vouchers to purchase approved foods each month."
This method helps with counseling parents on how to prevent childhood obesity and provide resources to low-income families to afford nutritious food from grocery stores.
Michelle Obama is a big advocate to eliminate childhood obesity during her time as the First Lady. She created the "Let's Move" campaign to encourage children to be more active instead of sitting at home.
In her interview about the campaign she said, "The physical and emotional health of an entire generation and the economic health and security of our nation is at stake. This isn't the kind of problem that can be solved overnight, but with everyone working together, it can be solved. So, let's move."
American's meal choices could also have an effect to child obesity. Sam Kass, former white house chef, believes to be the case from "The Interview" about Americans having to change their eating habits by partnering with Ms. Obama for children to eat healthier.
He talk about how the Let's Move campaign change the eating habits for the younger children by learning the different type of vegetables and how it's nutritious for them. The results from the campaign see a "trend" of the portion size of junk food decreasing and a decline in the rate of obesity.
He stated that, "Serving fruit or vegetables with every meal has been a big battle. we’re on the right course and the key is not to turn back."
The story is about my take on solution journalism which gives an in depth look to the issue of childhood obesity. It tells the key points to of what the audience should pay attention to and tells them the professionals who are experts in the issue. From Michelle Obama to Sam Kass, each of them are great individuals to give information about childhood obesity and the solution to solve it. The importance of the issue as a new story is that there is complications to how to tell it in a unique way. What I meant about this is that journalist usually would not tell more information and never tell the audience how to respond to a public issue.
