Reflection 7: Social Status
Social Status is the standing or importance of people in society depending on the occupation, income, wealth, and organization. This term plays a role in society because it shows the hierarchy of specific social groups in the United States.
It's more frequently happening in income where there is no equality in income due to the various challenges that affects people with the disadvantages to accomplish it. In order for me to experience social status first hand, I use playspent.org to the learn different scenarios to how you spend your money in a month while under a low income.
The scenarios first starts after you finish choosing between the three jobs that are a 2nd shift warehouse position, administrator office temp and an experience restaurant position. The game would list three aspects from the job you pick for weekly pay such as monthly pay for taxes, taxes, and monthly take home pay.
As I go through the game, I would reflect on the social status from creating a union for more paid to getting fired and try to salvage money until a new job comes along. The experience from playing the game relates to the hardship African Americans face with being the most racial group to be in poverty.
According to the article "Face of poverty: What racial, social groups are more likely to experience it?," 9.1 million in total are in poverty and 21.4 percent of the poor population are African Americans.
Buying a apartment was very tough considering how much i have to pay for with the minimum wage pertaining to the money from the warehouse job I choose. The apartment was too small so the yard sale was a better option because I would be able to get more money from the stuff I have, but only got 150 dollars.
It was worth it because I would be able to collect more cash as a person with low income. Sometimes people with low income what have to sacrifice time with things we have to do earn more money that makes a difference.
This is really difficult for parents which have to miss some moments from their child's life in order to bring in more money. Moments like taking care of their skid child and missing their plays are some examples on what to sacrifice in order to survive a low-income household.
Some of these issues of surviving low income happens in media all the time when an event affects them the most. A recent news story about 2 million vaccine in California's low-income cities and sparking a change for worldwide openings for businesses. This story started with the news report on television for inequality of minorities from low-income areas being late in acquiring vaccination.
